Climb to the Top of the Search Engines

Probably the best way to get free traffic to your web site is by getting to the elusive top of the search engines. Achieving a position near the top of the search engines can be difficult and takes a lot of time, but it pays off in a torrent of free traffic. Here are some ideas for optimizing your search engine placement, otherwise known as SEO (search engine optimization).

Use a descriptive title for each page of your website. The first words in the title should be the ones that you expect customers to be using most often as their search terms. The title will be highlighted in the search engines, and you want people to see that which interests them.

Placing keywords in the right places can help in improving the ranking of your web site. Search engines look for important keywords in the headlines, subheads, and first paragraph. While you should make the first paragraph as rich in relevant keywords as possible, do not sacrifice content to do this.

Search engines view hyperlinks as important, so use appropriate keywords in hyperlinks. This technique works especially well when the name of the page to which you are hyperlinking has the same keywords as you are using in your hyperlink.

Construct your web site so that it consists of several pages. Each page should concentrate on one keyword or keyword phrase relating to your site.

Submit your site to the major search engines. The submission is easily done by using the “add your URL” link found on the search engine site.

Links from good quality sites will help you rank well with some search engines. In addition, these links are another way for people to find your site. Find sites that complement yours and ask if they will consider some sort of exchange of links. This could be done the old way, by reciprocal linking, or in a more creative way, such as exchanging one-way links to different websites a party may own.
